Search for College of Business Dean is Underway

We have launched a search for the founding dean of the College of Business.  We hope that the new dean will begin on July 1, 2011, or as soon as possible thereafter.  The firm of Academic Search, Inc. will assist the UMW search committee.  Larry Penwell has served tirelessly and effectively as acting dean, and I can’t thank him enough for the vision and leadership he has provided during the challenging transition period.  His efforts have prepared us to take the next step of hiring the founding dean.

Larry has set the groundwork from which the new dean and the faculty and staff in the College of Business can develop continuing improvements and new initiatives in the future.

I have charged the Search Committee with bringing 3-5 finalists to UMW for campus visits, and have asked that the Committee prepare a report assessing the strengths and limitations of those candidates.  I have also emphasized the need for the search process to maintain confidentiality until the finalists make their campus visits, and have tasked the chair of the Search Committee with providing the UMW community with regular updates about the search process.

The Search Committee includes the following members:

• Mary Gendernalik-Cooper, Dean of the College of Education (Search Committee Chair)

Ken Machande, Department of Accounting and Information Systems

Kim Kinsley, Department of Accounting and Information Systems

Alan Heffner, Department of Management and Marketing

Wei Chen, Department of Management and Marketing

• Bob Rycroft, Department of Economics

Venitta McCall, Department of Foundation Leadership and Special Populations

• and one student from the College of Business (to be named shortly)

The current plan is for the full position advertisement (as approved by the Search Committee) to be placed in the Chronicle of Higher Education to appear in the January 21, 2011 print issue. Online ads will be posted prior to January 21 in a number of appropriate locations as determined by the Search Committee, following advice by the search firm and guidance by prevailing UMW search practices.  The ad states a preferred deadline of February 25 in order for applications to receive “best consideration.”

The Search Committee will review applications and select a “short list” of candidates to be invited to neutral site interviews, to be held off campus.  Following the initial interviews, finalists selected by the Search Committee will come to UMW sometime in April for a campus visit and full on-site interview process.  Details of the on-site visit process will be worked out by the Search Committee following advice by Academic Search, Inc. and will incorporate the usual practices typically employed in on-campus interviews for decanal positions.

The goal is for the Search Committee to offer a recommendation to the Provost by April 25. While the goal is to have the founding dean in place for the start of the fall 2011 semester, events in the search process may dictate that a longer search period or a later start date is required.  If the applicant pool does not produce a satisfactory slate of candidates, or persons offered the position decline it, the general search timetable will be adjusted as necessary.

Additional details about the search process will be regularly posted at my office’s web site: www.umw.edu/provost.  You may check there for updates from the Search Committee as events transpire.
