An End, a Beginning, and More Successes with Student Fulbright Applications

It is a great pleasure to share with you this last Provost’s Newsletter for the 2015-16 academic year.  It has been an exciting and significant year, with the Board of Visitor’s approval of the UMW 2020 Strategic Plan and, most importantly, the hiring of our new President, Dr. Troy Paino.   Dr. Paino is expected to arrive soon after the July 4 holiday, and several members of his leadership team, myself included, will be meeting with him as he and his family visit Fredericksburg in the weeks leading up to his start date.

We are also looking forward to our August Board retreat, which this year will include a thorough discussion of our Mission, Vision, and Values, the UMW 2020 Strategic Plan, and our goals for the upcoming 2016-17 academic year. It will be important as we begin the next academic year that find appropriate opportunities to engage President Paino in conversations with faculty about the present and future of the University.

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone involved with this year’s group of student Fulbright applicants.   We have five students who have been awarded Fulbrights for the 2016-17 academic year, which is, needless to say, a superb result.  These students are: Anna Boland (Germany, English Teaching Assistant), Lauren Bortfeld (Argentina, ETA), Luci Coleman (South Africa, Research), Lisa Johnson (Spain, ETA), and Cara Wimberley (Turkey, ETA). We have also had two Alternates named, Shirley Martey (Turkey, ETA) and Alexandra Hoenscheid (Germany, Research).  In addition, Ellen Rives Kuhar was a Semi-Finalist (Croatia, ETA). Again, congratulations to all!

Thanks as well to the entire team that supports and guides students through this process—Nabil Al-Tikriti  and Dianne Baker (Co-Faculty Program Advisors) as well as the full Fulbright Committee, Ann Witkowski, Caitie Finlayson, Pat Reynolds, and Rosemary Jesionowski.  This is such an outstanding result that I wanted to share it with everyone here! Bravo, all!

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the General Faculty Meeting on Wednesday!
