Congratulations to Newly Promoted and Tenured Colleagues!

It’s always a pleasure to start the academic year by announcing and congratulating our newly tenured and promoted colleagues. I’m very pleased to say that 11 of our colleagues have earned promotion and/or tenure.  I wanted to share their names again so that you might join me in congratulating them on the achievement of these significant professional milestones as we start our new academic year.  Five persons were promoted to the rank of professor, two were tenured and promoted to associate professor, one was tenured, and three were promoted to the rank of senior lecturer.  The full list of everyone who earned promotion or and/or tenure along with their college and department and/or disciplinary affiliation appears on the next page.

Those earning promotion to the rank of professor are:

Susan Fernsebner, College of Arts and Sciences, History and American Studies
Deborah O’Dell, College of Arts and Sciences, Biological Sciences
Angela Pitts, College of Arts and Sciences, Classics
Anand Rao, College of Arts and Sciences, Communication
Charles Sharpless, College of Arts and Sciences, Chemistry

Those earning tenure and promotion to the rank of associate professor are:

Marcelo Fajardo-Cårdenas, College of Arts and Sciences, Modern Languages and Literatures
Hilary Stebbins, College of Arts and Sciences, Psychological Science

Earning tenure:

Beverly Epps, College of Education

Those earning promotion to the rank of senior lecturer (all in the Athletics, Health, and Physical Education Department) are:

Abby Brethauer
Lindsey Elliott
Corey Hewson

EVERYONE listed above deserves recognition for their noteworthy achievements as well as our thanks for their many contributions to the University.  Perhaps you want to add your own words of congratulation when see them on campus (if you haven’t already done so, that is)!

Each college conducted separate promotion and tenure deliberations following procedures specified in the Faculty Handbook.  As most of you know, the review process is an arduous one that begins in May (when the person formally requests to be considered) and doesn’t end until the following April when the Board of Visitors makes the formal award of promotion or tenure.

I offer everyone who earned promotion and/or tenure sincerest congratulations and the very best wishes for continued professional success at UMW.
