Upcoming Deadlines – Sabbaticals and Jepson Fellowships

These important due dates are coming soon. Sabbaticals and Jepson Fellowships are competitive programs, and the first step is for those eligible to submit the required application.  While the eligibility criteria and the application procedures for these two programs are different, they share one thing in common: applications for both due on Tuesday, September 6 (by 5 p.m.).

Sabbatical applications are to be submitted to your college dean, who will conduct the first review and make an initial recommendation that will be sent simultaneously to the Provost and the university committee on Sabbaticals, Fellowships, and Faculty Awards. The committee will make recommendations to the Provost, who will make the final recommendations to the Board of Visitors.  The Board will award sabbaticals for the 2017-18 academic year at their November, 2016 meeting.

Complete application details are available at the Provost’s web page.  As stated in the University Faculty Handbook, sabbatical leaves of either one semester with full pay and full benefits or one academic year with half pay and full benefits are available for tenured full-time teaching faculty members. Those applying for sabbatical leave must have completed, by the time of the leave, six years of full-time teaching at the University or six years of full-time teaching after the completion of a previous sabbatical leave. Faculty members granted leave will be obligated to continue employment at the University for at least one year after the leave or to repay the full amount of the sabbatical support received.

Jepson Fellowships are open to full-time junior faculty members (persons at the rank of assistant or associate professor) who will have had at least three years of full-time faculty service at UMW by the time the fellowship would commence. These applications are due on Tuesday, September 6, and are to be submitted to John Morello, Associate Provost for Academic Affairs, George Washington Hall, room 309.  Jepson applications will be reviewed by the Sabbaticals, Fellowships, and Faculty Awards Committee, and their recommendations will be provided to the Provost. The Provost will, in turn, make final recommendations to the Board of Visitors, and the Board will make final decisions at their November, 2016 meeting.

Complete details about the Jepson Fellowship program, along with all application requirements, are provided here. In addition, the rank and length of service requirements stated above, please note these additional conditions: a person (1) may receive a Jepson Fellowship only once, (2) may not apply for the Fellowship if she/he has submitted an application for promotion to professor, and (3) may not apply simultaneously for a Jepson Fellowship and a sabbatical.

Once again, the deadline for Sabbatical applications and for Jepson Fellowships applications is Tuesday, September 6 (by 5 p.m.). In both cases, one print copy and one electronic copy of the application (in pdf format, preferably) must be submitted. Complete applications must be received by the deadline in order to be considered.
