As we enter the final week of classes, here’s an update on a few developments since the last newsletter. Please take note of the important information, announcements, and deadlines that are included in this issue. See you at the General Faculty Meeting!

An End, a Beginning, and More Successes with Student Fulbright Applications

It is a great pleasure to share with you this last Provost’s Newsletter for the 2015-16 academic year.  It has been an exciting and significant year, with the Board of Visitor’s approval of the UMW 2020 Strategic Plan and, most importantly, the hiring of our new President, Dr. Troy Paino.   Dr. Paino is expected to arrive soon after the July 4 holiday, and several members of his leadership team, myself included, will be meeting with him as he and his family visit Fredericksburg in the weeks leading up to his start date.

General Faculty Meeting Set for Wednesday, April 20

The University’s annual April General Faculty Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 20, 2016 and will be held in Dodd Auditorium in George Washington Hall on the Fredericksburg campus, starting at 4:00 pm.  Along with the traditional motion for endorsement of the candidates for graduation and tributes to our Emeriti and Retiring Faculty, this year’s meeting will feature the announcement of the winner of the Waple Faculty Professional Achievement Award.

Congratulations to Several Faculty Awarded Waple Professorships!

Through a generous gift made by the estate of Shirley Van Epps Waple (class of 1952), a number of faculty have received two-year Waple Professorships. Faculty selected were judged on the basis of proposals submitted in response to the call for applications that was distributed in January. Any tenured faculty member with a minimum of 6 years of service at UMW was eligible to apply for the two-year professorship, which provides an award of $15,000 per year. Congratulations to UMW External Grant and Contract Winners and Applicants!

UMW faculty and staff are continuing to submit external grant and contract proposals and to achieve success. Since August 15, 2015, twenty applications for external funding have been processed through the Provost’s Office. And six current full-time faculty members, one administrative/professional faculty member, one adjunct faculty member, and one new faculty member who will join us in August have been awarded a total of eight separate grants and/or contracts. Congratulations to everyone who applied and to those who received awards! Keep reading to see the list of all successes and applications.

Virginia Mandates Review of AP, IB, CLEP, and Cambridge Examination Course Credit

As a result of legislation passed by the General Assembly, all public higher education institutions in the Commonwealth have been directed to review and revise (as needed) their policies for granting undergraduate course credit to entering freshman students who have taken one or more Advanced Placement, Cambridge Advanced (A/AS), College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), or International Baccalaureate examinations. We are required to report the results of these reviews to SCHEV once they are completed.

Better News About the Summer Session

For the first time since 2010, we can report that summer session enrollments are running slightly ahead of the year to date pace from a comparable time last year. We are hopeful that this encouraging trend will continue. In addition to reporting some enrollment facts, the rest of this piece will review some of the basic policies we will be following with regard to faculty compensation for nine-month and adjunct faculty with respect to their summer session teaching.
