A Brief Look Ahead . . .

Greetings to all, and a warm welcome as you prepare to return to campus in the days ahead.  I know you share my excitement as we welcome President Paino to campus.  Dr. Paino has been drinking from the proverbial firehose these past few weeks, and I know he is looking forward to getting to know all of you in the weeks and months ahead.

Reminder about the President’s “All University” and the General Faculty Meeting!

We have two important and separate events that will kick off our new academic year — the President’s “All University” opening assembly on Wednesday, August 17 at 8:30 a.m. and the traditional General Faculty Meeting on Thursday, August 25 at 10 a.m. Each event will have a different focus and purpose. Please read on to learn few additional details about what will be happening at each session.

Congratulations to Newly Promoted and Tenured Colleagues!

It’s always a pleasure to start the academic year by announcing and congratulating our newly tenured and promoted colleagues. I’m very pleased to say that 11 of our colleagues have earned promotion and/or tenure.  I wanted to share their names again so that you might join me in congratulating them on the achievement of these significant professional milestones as we start our new academic year.  Five persons were promoted to the rank of professor, two were tenured and promoted to associate professor, one was tenured, and three were promoted to the rank of senior lecturer.  The full list of everyone who earned promotion or and/or tenure along with their college and department and/or disciplinary affiliation appears on the next page.

Upcoming Deadlines – Sabbaticals and Jepson Fellowships

These important due dates are coming soon. Sabbaticals and Jepson Fellowships are competitive programs, and the first step is for those eligible to submit the required application.  While the eligibility criteria and the application procedures for these two programs are different, they share one thing in common: applications for both due on Tuesday, September 6 (by 5 p.m.).

NEH Summer Stipend Applications – UMW Nomination Process and Deadlines

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) summer stipend program requires that any applicant who is teaching at a college or university be nominated by their institution in order to be eligible for consideration.  Each institution may nominate up to two persons, and the NEH requests that institutions announce their nomination procedures.  Click “read more” to see UMW’s procedures.

Congratulations to UMW External Grant Winners and Applicants!

UMW faculty and staff are continuing to submit external grant and contract proposals and to achieve success. Since April 2016, faculty and administrative/professional faculty members have been awarded four separate grants, contracts, and/or agreements. Eight additional applications for external funding or support have been processed through the Provost’s Office and submitted to various agencies or organizations. Congratulations to everyone who applied and to those who received awards! To see the list of all successes and applications, keep reading!

Calendars for Planning Your Academic Year

As we do each year, there are a number of important activities scheduled in the so-called “pre-week.”  That calendar is available here.  In addition, there are several other calendars found at the calendars link on the Provost’s web page. Depending on your particular needs, one of these should be helpful to you.
