The Spring semester . . .

Dear colleagues —

I hope your semester is going well so far. In addition to congratulating our newest Waple Professorship recipients (see the additional story for more details), I ask that you take the time to nominate your accomplished and dedicated faculty colleagues for the annual teaching and service awards. We have a number of different awards recognizing faculty for teaching, service, and professional activity. And, as you’ll recall, one award is reserved for new colleagues who have been with us between two to five years.

Nominate Colleagues for Faculty Awards

Following up on Teresa Coffman’s call sent by email to you on January 22 – we’re taking nominations for five faculty awards, and we hope you’ll consider recognizing a deserving faculty member with a nomination. Congratulations to the Next Group of WAPLE PROFESSORSHIP Winners

Thanks to an extraordinary gift to honor Shirley Van Epps Waple’s legacy, UMW is able to award Waple Professorships to several outstanding faculty.  The first Waple Awards were made in the spring of 2014, and the  latest group of new Waple Professors have recently received their award letters. Reviews of the Statement of Community Values and Guiding Principles on Diversity and Inclusion Are Underway

Co-chaired by Anand Rao and Cedric Rucker, the Committee to Review the Statement of Community Values and the Statement of Guiding Principles on Diversity and Inclusion will be holding a final open forum next week and has opened an online comment form to receive your feedback. The Committee’s goal is to develop a recommendation for the Board of Visitors by the end of the spring semester. This is important work for UMW and I urge you to take part in these efforts. Please keep reading for information about the Committee’s timeline, community outreach efforts, and the type of feedback being requested.

Summer Session Registration Starts in One Month

Summer session registration will open on Monday, March 12, 2018. We have once again developed a varied schedule of classes – programs in all three colleges are offering courses. A total of 162 courses are on the summer schedule, 45 of which are being offered in a fully online format. Take a look at the full schedule of summer session offerings. And to echo the summer session “tag line” we’ve been using, we hope to see a strong number of students coming to campus this summer to “Catch Up. Get Ahead. Take Something New.”
